We are never as unhappy as we think, or as happy as we had hoped.

Le Rochefoucauld - Maxims I: 59

Seeds...

It is often the case that the seeds of our greatest achievements are sown (unbeknown to us) during our deepest troubles or personal disasters. One of the sources in art is pain but it is pleasure that keeps one working day in, day out...

Primary images...

Les moyens limitĂ©s font souvent le charme et la force des peintures primaires. Au contraire l’extension amène les arts de dĂ©cadence.

The limits set by the medium are frequently the source of fascination and power of the primary images. In contrast, extending them results in decadence.

George Braque - Pensées et Réflexions sur la peinture

The Carriage

I have at all times thought with my whole body and my whole life. I do not know what purely intellectual problems are .... You know these things by way of thinking, yet your thought is not your experience but the reverberation of the experience of others; as your room trembles when a carriage passes. I am sitting in that carriage, and often am the carriage itself.

Friedrich Nietzsche, Gesammelte Werke, XXI, 81; Posthumous notes about The Dawn.
